About This Spot

Stepping into Midtown Shangri-La in Detroit’s Cass Corridor is like walking into an unpretentious, welcoming neighborhood sanctuary where the neighborhood’s cultural heartbeat gently hums beneath the vibrant surface. The air carries the inviting aroma of rich spices and fresh ingredients, setting a thoughtful, easygoing pace that invites you to linger — whether you’re seated at the bar or tucked into a quiet table.

This is a spot where the warmth of human connection blends seamlessly with the fragrant, layered flavors of expertly prepared Asian dishes. The atmosphere strikes a balance between casual comfort and quiet excitement — it’s lively, yet intimate, the kind of place where the hum of conversation mingles with the clink of glasses and the subtle sizzle of the kitchen’s creations.

Here, menus unfold with an honest variety that doesn’t overwhelm but inspires discovery. From delicate dim sum selections to vibrant sushi rolls and soulful noodle bowls, every bite holds a hint of tradition and careful craft. Whether enjoying the tender, richly sauced beef dishes or savoring the bright, fresh notes in their sushi offerings, the kitchen reveals a respectful nod to authentic flavors without pretense.

Patrons often find Midtown Shangri-La’s food reliably inviting — the kind of place that delivers consistently warm plates served at a thoughtful temperature, with room for personal tastes and dietary needs to be met attentively. The bar adds another layer to the experience: a quiet place for reflection or conversation, where creative cocktails or a well-poured whiskey enhance the evening’s rhythm.

Ultimately, Midtown Shangri-La is a place where the food feels like an extension of community storytelling — dishes that become a quiet moment of joy in the day, shared without fanfare but with genuine care. It’s not just about filling a table; it’s about filling a space with moments that feel quietly special, where comfort and discovery meet with graceful ease.

Good small restaurant with a large menu of sushi, dim sum, and Chinese food. I tried a bit of all and it was all delicious. Preferred pan fried dumpling over steamed but still good nonetheless.

Great food. Thats all.i can say. I just wish the fried rice and egg drop soup had veggies in it. Otherwise, this place hits the mark. I will be back.

Amazingly tender beef with the beef & broccoli! The sushi was outstanding! Good service and the food was nice and hot when served! No baby change station in the bathroom.

This was a very pleasant surprise, recommended by a friend. We ate at the bar and I wish we caught the name of the woman that served us..she was great, very helpful and accommodating with my partner and the dietary restrictions from being Celiac+Lupus.. which can make finding safe places to eat here difficult to say the least. There were several very delicious dim sum options we could both enjoy including a really nice deep-fried baby squid and some seafood kau. I also had curried squid that was amazing. The small (albeit limited) bar had several yummy and inventive drinks. I had a personal favorite local belgian-style beer that was on tap, there are also several domestic and imported bottles on offer. We are very much looking forward to subsequent visits to enjoy some sushi and entrees and sharing this gem with friends. Thank you so much!

What a phenomenal discovery this was! We made the excellent decision to stop here for lunch right before starting our long journey back to Northeast Ohio, and it proved to be the perfect final meal. We dove straight into the Dim Sum offerings, ordering six diverse items, and were genuinely amazed that every single one was flawlessly executed. The quality across the board was exceptionally high, demonstrating consistency that is hard to find. The absolute star of the show, however, was the Garlic and Chives Pan Cakes—a dish so outstanding it instantly became a firm favorite. Beyond the fantastic food, the experience offers remarkable value. The pricing here is surprisingly affordable, making the superior quality of the dim sum an incredible bargain. The service was equally impressive. Our server was notably helpful and kind, ensuring our order was placed efficiently—a huge plus when you’re trying to hit the road. We were so impressed by the entire operation that we sought out the manager just to express our gratitude. Our only true regret is the 3.5-hour distance separating us from this exceptional restaurant. If it were closer, it would be our regular dining destination. This spot is highly recommended as a destination stop for any food lover passing through!

I've been eating here often with friends since it was Twingo's! This is our go-to restaurant. Consistently excellent food--fresh, great flavor--no matter what we try (current faves are the mango shrimp, eggplant with shrimp paste & the red & green curries). Always helpful friendly staff--full bar is a plus!

Our first time here - lunch before heading back home to Northeast Ohio. We ordered 6 different things from the Dim Sum menu and everything was amazingly good ! The garlic and chives pan cakes were my favorite . The prices were also very affordable. It’s too bad that it’s 3.5 hours away from home because we’d eat here all the time . The service was excellent , the server who took our order was especially helpful and kind. My daughter and I loved this place so much that I made it a point to tell the manager .

I love this place! Honestly it's rare to see a restaurant do such a variety of things and do it all so well. The sushi is amazing. The entrees are delicious. They have a decent selection of beer and wine, and they make great cocktails! The staff is so friendly, attentive, and helpful. Excellent selection of vegetarian options, but the meat dishes are delicious as well.
